Our era today is the era of the Internet. Internet is a vast network that connects computers all over the world and provides an amazing facility to provide important information to the people sitting in any corner of the world. Through this, we can easily provide information by connecting a computer kept at one place to one or more computers.


Through the Internet, we can easily send small or big messages or any type of information from one computer to another computer or digital device like tablet and mobile in a few seconds. But here the question comes, where does the internet come from in our devices and how can we send messages from one device to another?


In our devices, we access internet in two ways, one through cellular network and other through internet connection. Excluding cellular networks, when we are able to access the Internet in our devices, we connect our devices to the Internet through a modem. And when we send data from one device to another, we are able to do it with the help of router which is connected to internet.


Modem and Router both help to provide internet service to our devices. But not everyone knows what is the difference between these two, so in today's post, I'm going to tell you about the difference between modem and router.


So let's first know what is a modem and how does it work.


What is modem and how does it work?

Modem is a device that converts digital signal into analog signal and analog signal into digital signal. It is used to allow two computers to communicate with each other through a telephone line. Here you need to know that computer works on digital mode whereas analog technology is used for exchanging messages over telephone lines.


A modem is an input and output device used to both send and receive information or data over telephone lines. Telephone lines send data or information in an analog group and not a digital group, so there is also a converter device that converts a signal from one device into a signal that another device can understand.


We know that analog signals can be transmitted through telephone lines; Digital signals cannot be transmitted. But by converting digital signal into analog signal by computer, communication is done by telephone line to another modem, where analog signal is again converted into digital signal by another modem and received on another computer. This process is called modulation and demodulation.


The modulator part of the modem converts the digital signal into an analog signal and the demodulator part converts the analog signal into a digital signal. Thus data is transferred from one computer to another through a modem.


When the first modem was made in 1962, modem was dial-up, meaning that a phone number had to be dialed into the modem to connect the device to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). These modems operated over phone lines and used a frequency of telephone calls that was limited to a maximum data transfer rate of 56 kbps.


Dial-up modems make full use of the local telephone line, so a one-time user can either access the Internet or make voice calls. Many changes have been made to modems in recent times and today Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and cable modems are used also known as broadband devices.


DSL modems operate over standard telephone lines but use a higher frequency range. DSL modems allow higher data transfer rates than dial-up modems and also do not block voice calls.


Cable modems send and receive data over television lines which are usually coaxial cables. Most cable modems support the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) which provides an efficient way to efficiently transmit TV, cable Internet and digital phone signals in a single line.


Broadband modems are also known as high speed modems and are used everywhere for internet access today.

Now, let's know what is a router and how does it work.


What is router and how does it work?

A router is a small electronic device that connects computer networks together via a wired or wireless connection. A router connects one computer network to another computer network, so it is also called an Internet working device. To connect a network to the Internet, the router must be connected to the modem, so most routers have a special Ethernet port that is designed to connect to the Ethernet port of a cable or DSL modem.


Routers consist of a Central Processing Unit (CPU), several types of digital memory, and an input-output interface. With the help of router, more than one computer available in the network is provided internet access through physical interface connection to all those computers. But these computers are not able to connect directly to the Internet through the router, for this the router has to be connected to a device that can provide internet to those computers and that device is a modem. That's why the position of the router is between the modem and the computer.


The job of a router is to transfer data from one computer to another. It works to send data in the form of packets from one network to another. Its main job is to receive packets and the receiver or IP address remains in these packets. The router checks this address with the addresses of computers in its network and then sends the data by finding the shortest part of the packet to reach the correct destination receiver. This is how networking devices work.


There are two types of routers in the modern world, a broadband router and a wireless router. Broadband routers can perform a variety of functions that are used to interconnect computers and connect to the Internet. The wireless router sends data to the device via the Internet and the device acts as a wireless access point for it, so it shares the data via a radio signal instead of any other cable. The wireless router creates an area within which all computers, tablets, mobiles can access the Internet, using a password and IP address for security.

Modem vs Router: What's the difference?

Now, you must have understood about modem and router, how it works. The job of both of them is to provide internet service to the computer. But there are some differences between them, let us know them.

  • The first difference is that the modem gives us internet service through the phone line in the traditional way and the job of the router is to connect to the modem and transmit the incoming digital signal to more than one computer, or device. This means that the router cannot connect our computer directly to the Internet.
  • Router cannot provide us internet without modem but modem can give us internet facility without router also.
  • A modem cable can provide an Internet connection to a single computer while a router can connect more than one computer to a network simultaneously and provide Internet access to each computer.
  • Internet access can be provided by connecting devices to Wi-Fi wirelessly through a router, but this is not possible in the case of a modem. To access the Internet from a modem, the devices require a wire or cable.
  • A router can form a local network, such as a computer with a printer, scanner, mobile, etc., can form a network in which, in addition to sharing an Internet connection, data files can also be shared. While it is not possible to create a local network in a modem, Internet access can be found only from the modem.
